FAMILies
As a father of two young children, I know how disorienting and difficult parenting can be at times. My overarching goal with family counseling is to find ways to bring parents and children back into relationship with each other. Our children's behavior cannot be separated from our own. When we are struggling with our children, the most effective interventions tend to be changes in our own habits--creating structure and boundaries, for example.
Recognizing our interconnectedness is the single most important aspect of family counseling. I generally recommend that many family members participate in the sessions, in order to gain an understanding of the family dynamics. An important part of the work is assessing how one member's behavior affects another's. Once I have an understanding of the "family map," I can determine how to work most effectively. Then, we can begin to unravel how behaviors between father and son, for instance, affect each other. Through bringing awareness to the impact our behavior has on our loved ones, we tap into the opportunity to heal and transform individually and collectively.
Family counseling is some of the most rewarding work that I have the privilege to facilitate.
